Welcome to the birth of my new newsletter.  After running my third photo safari on Cape Ann in Massachusetts, I decided I needed a venue to communicate with all the friends, students, fellow photographers and art lovers that I have been privileged to meet along the way.

NEWS
Keeping you in the loop!

I just won an award at the Rockport Art Association's Second Summer Photography Exhibition.  The Ira Fieldsteel Memorial Award for Excellence in Photography was for my "Orchid in a Box 4".  I recently started a new collection of square format images, printing at 16x16 and framing with a 4" 8 ply museum Matt. The "Orchid in a Box 4" image show price is $550 framed with museum glass. Look for other images on my website after it's update in July or e mail me a request for the Flowers in a Box Collection PDF.  Friends and family discounts available.

In case you have not heard, I have been accepted into the Master degree program in Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, starting September 2008.  Quite an honor and a challenge!

I have been privileged to be recently accepted into the Copley Society of Art, Boston which is the oldest art society in this country, and continue as an active member of the Salmugundi Art Club in New York City, which is the second oldest art society.  Art as a painter or as a photographer is ONE Art.  A slow move towards acceptance has begun.  Please support this trend!  The photography approach is different, but not less.

How to see ART!

In B&W photos, composition and emotional imact are determined by shapes, lines, textures, and perspective created by tones.
In Color, both range of tones and the range of colors establish the structure. Red is the most powerful color and will dominate a scene.

Order and tension are key elements of all great photos. Simplicity brings order and stability, but movement and activity such as an S curve bring tension. We look at art with these primary influences in mind, but we are subject to secondary impulses as well.  These include dominance (the center of interest), balance, proportion, pattern and rhythm.

Think about why you enjoy an image.  What provokes you to take a second look, and feel good in it's presence.  Art for me is like looking a a peaceful sea that can be vicious the next moment.  Surround yourself with beauty, to better understand the joy of being alive, and living each moment as if it is your last.
