NEW: CORE CURRICULUM PROGRAM FOR BEGINNERS
For the first time this fall, a 4 course Core Curriculum for Beginners will be offered at the Greenwich Art Society Studio

School. (Drawing I - Basics for Beginners, Painting I – Basics for Beginners, Demystifying Color for Beginners, and,

offered in the spring, Composition for Beginners. See course descriptions below.) Completing these four courses will

equip a beginner to successfully embark on most other art classes (though these are not prerequisites for other

classes). Beginning around noon, classes finish by 2:30.

 

NEW: CREATIVE WRITING FOR VISUAL ARTISTS
For visual artists who also have an interest in writing as self-expression, come and join the Greenwich Art Society for

this exciting new addition to our schedule on Tuesday evenings. ROBERT MASTERSON will teach this unique course

that will help visual artists clarify their visions through the craft of writing. An award-winning writer and wonderful

storyteller, Mr. Masterson teaches successful writing workshops throughout the country.

 

NEW: PARENT/CHILD MONOPRINT WORKSHOP
A four-week, Monday afternoon workshop with MARY NEWCOMB during which you and your child will produce

unique, one-of-a-kind prints. It’s easy and fun and the prints will make perfect holiday gifts. See class description

below.

 

NEW: ARTIST WORKSHOPS
The Greenwich Art Society will be offering one-time workshops throughout the term. You will learn a specific skill, meet

other artists and enjoy some social time. We will advertise these as they are scheduled. Scheduled at the time of

printing are:

*PREPARING A CANVAS with RABBIT SKIN GLUE with KATHIE MILLIGAN
(Friday evening, Oct 17, 6-9 PM)
Using rabbit skin glue to prepare a canvas for oil painting results in richness unattainable with gesso preparation.

Bring stretcher bars and canvas. Glue provided. $75.

*DRAWING A BIRD’S NEST with HAZEL JARVIS
(Saturday afternoon, October 18, 2:30-5:00)
Get a taste for Botanical Illustration and come away with a lovely drawing of a bird’s nest and some new friends.

Materials provided. $75.

 
NEW: MOTHER/DAUGHTER WORKSHOPS IN FASHION
Register for 1 or all 3 workshops (limit to 10 mother/daughter pairs)

Fashion Drawing
(Saturday September 20, 2:30- 5:30)
Draw from the model! It’s fun and challenging to learn the style and techniques for capturing the fashion figure.

Students create a croqui figure and learn to draw clothing shapes that can express their creative design ideas.

$100 (model and materials provided.)

Drawing in Style- Fashion Accessories
(Saturday, October 25, 2:30 – 5:30)
Students create a full color still life of style and trends in accessories. Learn to draw prints, plaids, fabrics, feathers and

fur that combine to make fun accessory shapes. $100 (materials provided.)

Elements of Style- Drawing, Fashion and Decorating Trends
(Saturday, November 22, 2:30 – 5:30)
Students explore color combinations, learn drawing skills, and use photo collage to create a trend board that

expresses their style in fashion or design ideas for their dream bedroom.

Individual and group instruction. A strong traditional approach is stressed to prepare for individual expression.

The course encourages technical and stylistic experimentation within representational painting.

THE ART OF MONOPRINTS for PARENT and CHILD with MARY NEWCOMB

Mary Cassatt, Degas and Picasso did it, and you can too! Participants in this four-week, parent/child workshop

will explore the printmaking technique of monoprint, a process whereby only one print is pulled from the printing

plate. Using safe, non-toxic paints, you and your child will produce unique one of a kind prints perfect for holiday

giving. Sharing this exciting, fun and easy printmaking technique with the special child (siblings welcome) in your

life will be a rewarding experience for all. Children aged 5-14 years.

DRAWING I - BASICS FOR BEGINNERS with ANNA PATALANO
 

Drawing skills are developed through emphasizing individual, visual perception. The student will be working from

life –mostly still life – with emphasis on eye-hand-brain coordination. Students will use various drawing media

(ebony pencils, graphite pencils and compressed charcoal) developing form through the use of linear elements,

then graduating to value studies. The premise is that anyone can learn how to draw anything provided he or she

is taught how to SEE. Teaching is structured around the individual perception of each student.

DRAWING II – BUILDING ON THE BASICS with KATHIE MILLIGAN
 

Would you like to take your existing drawing skills and bring them to a higher level?
If so, this class is for you.  Learn intermediate drawing fundamentals including visual measurement,

mark making, negative and positive space, perspective, composition, light and shade, and visual relationships.

We will experiment with pencil, charcoal, ink wash and printmaking. Drawing will be mostly from still life with the

occasional use of the model. There will be optional trips to museums to draw from Old Master artwork.

Please bring a sketchpad (9" X 12"), HB - 4B pencils and an eraser to the first class.
Note: Drawing I – Basics for Beginners is not a prerequisite for this class.

MIXED MEDIA, COLLAGE AND CONSTRUCTION with CAROL NIPOMNICH DIXON

 

Put together realistic or non-objective 2- or 3-dimensional collages or assemblages (including box art) using

papers, fabrics, photographs and found objects. Emphasize color, texture and composition as you juxtapose and

transform materials into new visual statements that may range from autobiographical expressions to

interpretations of our society and imaginary visions. Experiment with the addition of other media to enhance your

images.

CREATIVE WRITING for VISUAL ARTISTS with ROBERT MASTERSON

 

Give voice to your vision through writing exercises and experiments, journal writing, free writing, and writing

assignments. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring the five senses, the powers of observation, and their

communication through writing. Students will be challenged to expand their perceptions through the use of

language and to expand their perceptions of language as an artistic medium.

PAINTING I - BASICS FOR BEGINNERS with ANNA PATALANO
 

This class will use simple methods of translating basic composition to canvas in order to get right to the painting.

Basic elements of compositional design, color, and texture will be introduced. Learn to use traditional palettes of

color as a way to gain insight into color mixing. We will learn about the basics of painting materials and how they

differ from each other; painting tools, surfaces and supports; and painting techniques such as impasto, glazes,

scumbling, and wet-into-wet. Though content of this course is very structured, students will be encouraged to

develop their individual visions and styles in both oil and acrylic paint.

PROCESS PAINTING: EXPLORING ABSTRACT AND NON-OBJECTIVE PAINTING
with ANNA PATALANO
(Formerly called Painting From Within)
 

For intermediate and advanced painting students. Study the elements of abstraction and non-objective painting

and how they evolved in art history. Learn how to create a visual image based on these principles -- using color,

form, and space to structure an image based on the flow of the painting process itself. Different painting

materials, mediums, tools, and techniques will be stressed. Critique of in-class and outside-of-class work is an

integral part of the course.

Learn fundamentals and finishing techniques with easy to follow step-by-step method of sculpting the figure in

DEMYSTIFYING COLOR for BEGINNERS with SHAUNA HOLIMAN

 

Do you wonder how people who work with color (artists, decorators, etc.) pick just the right colors that go

together so well? This very pragmatic, hands-on course will answer your questions and teach you to confidently

mix colors using oil paint. We will explore the color system used by paint manufacturers and gain deep insight on

how to cope with the overwhelming selection of paint colors available on the market today. By the end of the

course, students will 1) be able to accurately recreate any color palette they see using a limited number of paint

colors, 2) be fearless in art, fabric and home decorating stores and 3) have their eyes opened to color all around

them. No experience required, but patience with process is a must.

FASHION DRAWING FOR UPPER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS with
MICHELLE RUDOLPH
 

For the aspiring young designer, this course will improve drawing skills and teach the techniques of fashion

illustration. The class will focus on figure drawing (from clothed models) and include sketching fabrics and

accessories. Designed for the student who loves to draw and is excited by the fashion field. Tuition includes

materials and model fees.

Explore color, texture and depth of pastels, a unique painting medium that requires special techniques to master

the subtleties of layering pigments. Focus on standard techniques of painting shapes and the importance of value

relationships. Students will be introduced to various pastels available today, and the painting surfaces used by

nationally known artists. Students should be familiar with good drawing principles and have had some painting

experience in other mediums.

PROBLEM SOLVING in OIL, ACRYLIC, PASTEL and PENCIL with RICHARD BYRNES
 

A flexible course designed to get artists of any level over any stumbling blocks. Subjects include still life,

landscape, people – face or figure. Working with oil, acrylic, pastel or pencil, from life or photos, students will

learn how to get an idea onto canvas, put down local color, develop light and shade and create an interesting

composition.

Tuition payable in advance. Receipt of your check will hold your place in class. Download registration slip

below. To continue a course into the coming term, students must sign up and remit tuition 2 weeks in

advance. Further enrollment - first come, first served.
