Biography of Joseph Dermody

As an interdisciplinary artist, Joseph Dermody (born October 7, 1979 in Warwick, Rhode Island) has always focused on a balanced mix of many different forms of visual and performing arts. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Music Performance from Rhode Island College, Guildhall School of Music in London and Purchase Conservatory, NY. Joseph currently identifies himself as an Dimensional Expressionist; His love for music, painting, sculpture and structural design have been synergistically cultivated from early childhood and continues to influence his work across disciplines. His classical training, combined with a desire for experimentation has led to an awareness and freedom that allows for a continuous evolution of creativity and artistry. Joseph has received seven awards in the past three years for his work including a spot in the NY Times and Architectural Digest Magazine. When not painting, Joseph designs and builds furniture in his studio in Upstate New York, professionally plays the violin and viola with various symphonies around NYC, is a founding member of 'Scape Trio, and holds faculty positions in Music at Rye Country Day School, Rye, NY and Concordia College, Bronxville, NY. Most recently, Joseph founded ‘SCAPE, uniquely paired concert series where music and art come together to inspire communities and create artistic awareness through the combination of living visual artists and live chamber music. Mr. Dermody is a Loft Artists Association studio member in Stamford, CT

Artist Statement: Greenwich based artist, Joseph Dermody finds living in coastal New England to be a constant inspiration for his work. Drawing upon local natural elements, he reconstructs the physical world into abstract paintings, sculptures, and furniture, making new art from old recycled materials. The motherboard of a computer or a piece of driftwood in the ocean becomes a trendy coffee table or an eye-catching piece of art. He is constantly recycling his ideas as well. What may not work for him in one medium may well come to life in another. As a professional musician, Dermody also draws from his musical experiences which inspire his creative process. This is especially apparent in his paintings and sculptures. These movement based works dance across a flat surface like music through time. Such creative complexity is also found in Dermody’s furniture design. A table, bench, or chair ignites Joseph’s passion for recycling physical material and emotion into three dimensional space. There is a commitment in Dermody’s work to be approachable, inviting viewers to experience his vision in their own unique way.
